A popular process in the finishing of metal parts of trucks, cars, and motorcycles, as well as household fixtures such as faucets and knobs, Nickel-chrome plating actually consists of at least two separate plating processes: the item is first plated with nickel, and then plated with chrome.
The Electro Nickel Plating Process :
Electro nickel plating, also known as nickel electro-deposition, is becoming an increasingly popular process for a variety of different manufacturing applications. Electro nickel plating is a process that uses an electrical current to coat a conductive material, typically made of metal, with a thin layer of nickel. Other metals used for electroplating include stainless steel, copper, zinc, and platinum. This Plating provides a better Brightness. This process is well known for its effectiveness & comprises of the following:
1. Bright Nickel
2. Dull Nickel
3. Satin Nickel
4. Electroless Nickel Process
PROCESS SEQUENCE FOR NICKLE CHROME PLATING PLANT
SOAKING CLEANING:
Cleaners should be skimmed during the immersion cycle to eliminate contacting the parts with oily films upon entering the tank and again upon withdrawal from the tank. A small amount of oily or greasy soil can quickly contaminate every tank in the line if the floating film is not removed between racks.
ANODIC CLEANING:
It is always recommended to follow any Cathodic cleaning step, with a short Anodic step. This is because the Cathodic cleaning process, while effective in loosening contaminants on the surface of the part, acts in some ways as a plating process.
WATER RINSE - I :
Cleaning to remove all residual traces of dirt and surface impurities from the components.
ACID DIP:
Acid dip is a metal surface treatment used to remove impurities, such as stains, inorganic contaminants, rust or scale from ferrous metals, copper, and aluminum alloys.
WATER RINSE – II, III :
Cleaning to remove all residual traces of dirt and surface impurities from the components.
NICKEL PLATING:
Nickel electroplating is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of nickel onto a metal object. The nickel layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, wear resistance, or used to build-up worn or undersized parts for salvage purposes. . The nickel anode is dissolved into the electrolyte in form of nickel ions. The ions travel through the solution and deposit on the cathode.
NICKEL DRAG OUT:
Nickel drag-out tank is a rinse tank that initially is filled with pure water. Air agitation is often used to aid the rinsing process because there is no water flow within the tank to cause turbulence.
NICKEL RINSE – I, II:
Both rinsing follows cleaning, plating, and stripping operations. Adequate rinsing is a critical step within the plating process.
CHROME PLATING:
Chrome plating (less commonly chromium plating), often referred to simply as chrome, is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal or plastic object. The chromed layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, ease cleaning procedures, or increase surface hardness, and sometimes for aesthetic purposes a less expensive imitator of chrome will be used.
In these types of applications, hard chrome can reduce friction between mechanical parts, increase corrosion resistance and allow the material to endure increased amounts of wear.
CHROME DRAG OUT:
Chrome drag-out tank is a rinse tank that initially is filled with pure water. As the plating line is operated, the drag-out rinse tank remains stagnant and its chemical concentration increases as more work is processed. Air agitation is often used to aid the rinsing process.
CHROME RINSE – I , II :
Rinsing follows cleaning, plating, and stripping operations. Adequate rinsing is a critical step within the plating process. Rinsing prepares a part for subsequent finishing operations, stops the chemical reaction, and prevents cross contamination of subsequent plating tanks.
CHROME NEUTRALIZER:
Chrome neutralizer affords a simple method for removing the chrome solution carried over on plated components.
HOT WATER RINSE:
The purpose of the hot water rinse is to eliminate the last traces of process chemicals and to raise the temperature of the metal sufficiently to cause flash drying of the parts before.
DRY:
Dry in Baking Oven.
